Our story
Restored’s origins go back to 2008, when co-founders Mandy Marshall and Peter Grant travelled to a UN conference in Mexico. Whilst there, they heard women speak about their experiences of gender-based violence, and God spoke powerfully.
Mandy and Peter left the conference with two key questions about responding to violence against women and girls (VAWG):
Where is the Church?
Where are the men?
This marked the start of a period of prayer and planning, in which God opened numerous doors and spoke clearly; there was a strong sense that God was confirming Mandy and Peter’s vision to engage the Church and encourage men to take action against VAWG.
The beginning of Restored
In 2010, Restored was founded. We began as an international alliance, bringing together like-minded organisations from across the world and developing training and resources for churches. Thanks to God’s faithfulness and provision, the work of Restored gained momentum.
We began to speak in churches and Christian media, and campaigned at national and international levels to ensure that VAWG remained on the agenda of decision makers. Our First Man Standing campaign sought to engage men in the conversation, encouraging them to consider how their words and actions can make a difference. In 2015 we established our online Survivors Network, and in 2022, the first ever Restored Beacon church was launched.
Our mission
Since our inception, the heart of Restored has been to see an end to violence against women and girls. We want the Church to take up its place in standing against injustice and providing places of welcome and safety for survivors. Over the years our work has grown and developed, bringing into view a mission with three key areas of focus:
- Speaking up about the realities of violence against women and girls
- Equipping the Church to respond to domestic abuse
- Supporting survivors
This mission is what drives everything we do at Restored. We’d love to have you join us on the journey, whether that’s through your church or as an individual – from praying, giving, or partnering with us, there are loads of ways that you can join in.
