Restored responds to Government plans to treat misogyny as a form of extremism

Restored are pleased to see the government take steps to respond to misogyny, treating it with the severity that it deserves. Recent news stories have highlighted once again that we are facing an epidemic of violence against women and girls (VAWG) in the UK, and misogyny and misogynistic attitudes are at the root of this. The impact of online influencers on young men is of particular concern, and we are pleased to see this given specific mention by the home secretary.

However, this must not end with a review: it must lead to real action to prevent the spread of misogynistic attitudes and to change the culture which has normalised violence against women and girls. It is vital that addressing the causes of VAWG is given its own specific focus, rather than getting lost amongst responses to other forms of extremism. We must also ensure that a counter-terrorism approach doesn’t lead to negative impacts on Black and minoritised women, who already face barriers to accessing support.

We look forward to seeing the government set out clear plans for action that take into account the intersecting needs of all women and girls.
